1. Trace very carefully with a fine pen (as opaque as possible for best results ). Make sure borders and rivers etc. do not go all the way to the coast and when drawing avoid lines touching if they are different things ice roads and rivers for example. Or open in a powerful graphics package import and trace using the pen tool set at a reasonable line weight. and add text as you wish as in my example (right). go to* Note: Remember when you plot a location on a map that; A, There are 360 in a circle. B, There are 60 minutes in one degree. C, There are 60 seconds in one minute. Seconds are then broken up into decimal places. | Good ways to draw maps for infographics
Maps on the web |
As an infographic designer its a common for me to use the internet as a source. It can vary on how useful it is but when it comes to maps you must be very careful indeed. First of all it can be very difficult to find a source for a map on the Web as in a lot of cases there is no source at all or if there is one it is a poor one. The Net can be good however for basic map shapes and place names but you would have to search long and hard to find a better source than Times Atlas for place positions on a map and of course Mountain High Maps is second to none as a template to draw maps from. The CIA Fact Book ( http://www.odci.gov/cia/publications/factbook/index.html ) is good for basic country shapes flags and information about a country. The most useful mapping aid on the web is the NIMA site this has a data base containing almost perhaps every place in the world. To use it just simply type in the place you wish to find and select the country and point you curser to submit and click it will then tell you if or how many places it has found with the description you have given a further click gives you the coordinates. So all you have to do is then plot it on a conventional map. Here are some other map sites to try:< World city maps: br>http://city.net/maps/ World relief maps http://www.reliefweb.int/mapc/index.html Other good sites: http://www.pathfinder.com/travel/maps/southamericaindex.html http://www.lib.utexas.edu/Libs/PCL/Map_collection/world_cities.html http://www.gebbieinc.com/magurl.htm http://www.odci.gov/cia/publications/nsolo/wfb-all.htm http://www.thomson.com/wadsworth/ritter/cart.html http://www.unhcr.ch/refworld/maps/maps.htm www.nationalgeographic.com/main.html http://metro.ratp.fr:10001/bin/cities/english http://www-map.lib.umn.edu/news.html
