INDIAN INSTITUTE OF SINDHOLOGY, Adipur -Gandhidham is the premier institute in India for the preservation and promotion of Sindhi culture. Since its inception, it has conceived the idea of developing itself into a Cultural University. For giving a proper shape to the idea, several symposia were held with the active participation of a number of well known scholars, writers and educationists of Sindhi language.
The need for such a University has arisen due to the fact that in India, Sindhi Community does not have its own exclusive geographical territory for the proper and overall development of its language, literature, education, art and culture.
It is visualised that on one hand this University, being the repository to provide the authentic information about all the aspects of Sindhi Community, will have the academic activities like research and advanced learning and on the other hand, it should function as a cultural centre for the community. Obviously for that reason, the Institutes like Vishwa Bharati (Shantiniketan), Gujarat Vidyapeeth (Ahmedabad), the Institute of Indology (Varanasi), the Institute of Tibetan Studies (Sarnath) and such other organisations cannot be made as "Model" for Bharati Sindhu Vidyapeeth, as they are mainly academic institutions having no direct contact with the masses and the cultural activities of the community. Thus Bharati Sindhu Vidyapeeth will become the model of its own.
Bharati Sindhu Vidyapeeth will be located at Adipur -' Gandhidham (Kutch) but it can have the centres anywhere in India and abroad. It will be a secular, non-sectarial and an open International University, which may conduct the courses and programmes in a regular manner or through correspondence and contact or by any other suitable manner.
The broad activities and programmes of the Bharati Sindhu Vidyapeeth will be as under:
i) To conduct courses on the subject like comparative culture, Sindhi Folk Lore, Sindhi language and literature, Museology, Ancient Sindhu Culture, Teachers' Training, Personality Development, Sindhi Handicrafts, Sindhi Entrepreneurship, Diplomacy & Foreign relations etc.;
ii) To provide facilities for research in the fields related to Sindhi language, literature, art and culture
iii) To develop museum with a view to presenting a historical perspective and development of Indus Valley Civilisation
iv) To set up an Art and Crafts Gallery to present the exhibits related to the Art and Crafts of Sindhu Kutch region
v) To publish magazines, bulletins, monographs, encyclopaedias, dictionaries, rare books and any other relevant material
vi) To hold seminars, national and international conferences, Workshops and Training programmes.
vii) Any other activity related to its aims and objects.
The Indian Institute of Sindhology Trust will remain as a parent organisation for the University. The university will be managed with the help of the following bodies:
(a) University Council - having representatives from the Government of India through Kandla Port Trust, Ministry of Human Resources Development, University Grants Commission, University of Gujarat and other such organisations; and
(b) Academic Council - having the representatives from various academic. Institutions like Sindhi Academies, Language Institutes, Scholars & Writers, for advising about the academic programmes.
To develop the Indian Institute of Sindhology into a university, a fund of Rs. 50 crores is required in phases of 5 years. Out of this, an amount of Rs. 10 crores will be kept as a Corpus Fund which will earn interest to be utilised for meeting the running expenses. The remaining amount of Rs. 40 crores is required to purchase land, furniture, equipment, computers etc.
We are hoping that some Sindhi person, organisation, Trust or Foundation will come forward and say 'Yes', I / We are ready to take the responsibility to establish Bharati Sindhi Vidyapeeth - A Cultural University.
