The Suffolk County was built by Boston Naval Shipyard, while the Lorain County and Wood County were built at American Shipbuilding in Lorain, Ohio.

Last WWII-type LST's with bow doors and ramp with  superstructure aft. Carried up to 20 amphibian tractors or 23 medium tanks.
