Ponderings on Life

Sorry about the blindingly pink backdrop, but I thought it was appropriate for the topic--LIFE. Life can blind you and make you want to vomit as well. Am I a pessimist???

You've wondered about the true meaning of life too, haven't you??? We go through the first third of our lives cramming millions of facts into our heads, most of which we will never use except to let us pass our tests, graduate, get into a good college, graduate cum laude from the college, and hopefully get a good job. Here, you can go two ways: you can get a job and work like a hamster in a metal wheel to get promotions, raises, and ever more money, or you can get a relaxing job, have lots of time with your loved ones, and worry constantly about the bills. Some of us are lucky enough to balance it out, but money money money is the god to many. When we retire, we are supposed to have fun, enjoy the fruits of our labor, live a little. How many people really do??? I hope it's more than I think.

"Row, row, row your boat...gently down the stream...
merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily, life is but a dream."

What is life??? How can we be self-conscious when we are just a mix of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and other elements??? What makes us "better" than say, a rock, or the atmosphere??? Is it the carbon??? Then why can we move, when trees, algae, mushrooms can't??? Does the cell wall mark the diffence between really being alive and just being a lving organism??? Are trees self-conscious??? Do cats know they will die--do dogs--do fish??? They feel pain--the nervous system ensures that. Yet, we don't think their minds are capable of processing thought like we do. Maybe they're not. Is intelligence overrrated??? Have you ever wondered how humans manage to survive? We're such unfit creatures physically--the strongest of humans wouldn't stand a chance bare-handed against say, a mountain lion in a flat-out fight, yet we have imprisoned animals, put them in zoos for our amusement (is it any wonder they sometimes lash out?) Was Darwin wrong, or is intelligence really such a gift??? Let's say it is--what a double edged sword, that leads to our self-doubt, self-pity, self-loathing. Animals never commit suicide--it's a purely human weakness. Have you ever seen an animal cry? Complain? Kill others of their species haphazardly in a fit of jealousy, envy, or spite? Ok. I digress. All this has already been said. More eloquently than my version as well. So--I quit.
