Make sure they fit in:

If the entry in the cell makes it very long and you want to split it into seperate lines, position your cursor on the cell from where you want to start a new line and press [Alt] + [Enter]. Excel increases the height of the row to fill your long tex. Make sure you press [Enter] after typing the text

 

Add Comments:

To add comment(s) to a cell or multiple cells, select the cells and right click. Select Insert Comment and type in the text. Point your mouse to the red arrow at the top-right corner to display the comment. To edit or Delete the comment, point the mouse to the red arrow, right-click and select Edit Comment or Delete Comment.

Wrap Text:

In your spreadsheet, if you wish to prevent your text from spilling over to the adjacent cells, use Merge Cells. This utility will display large blocks of text. Select the group of cells where you want the text to appear and right-click to bring up the shortcut menu. Choose Format Cells. Select the Alignment tab and click on the Wrap Text and Merge Cells option. Click OK.

Auto-size adjusting:

To retain the original height-to-width ratio of the chart, hold down[ Shift] while dragging a sizing handle.

Close Excel files at one go:

You have the option to close all your Excel files before you quit the application, instead of closing each one individually. Hold down [Shift] key and choose close all from the File menu

Set the table:

If you import an HTML table into Excel, the entire text will be in a single cell instead of being displayed across columns in a table. To fix that, select the column in the Data menu. A wizard walks you throough each step, breaking up text into columns.

Formatting made easy('95):

You are in the habit of frequently centre aligning text or numbers using the Format > Cells menu, a button on the toolbar will make your life a lot easier. Just right-click on any toolbar and select Customize. Choose Text Formatting and drag the Center Across Columns Button to your toolbar

Date and Time('95):

Press Ctrl + : (semicolon) to enter today's date in a cell. To enter the current time ina cell, press Ctrl + : (colon). To enter both in the same cell, press Ctrl + : and then a seperate character-such as a slash-then press Ctrl +

Breaking Cell Entries('97):

I you want to break a long cell entry into seperate lines, first position the cursor where you want a new line to start and press Alt+ Enter. Excel will then expand the row to accomodate wrapping lines of text. Finishing offf the process by pressing Enter.

Backgrounds('97):

You can add a background to an Excel bar or line chart. Right-click on the plot area ( the part behind the data points ) and select Format Plot Area. Under the patterns tab click on the fill effects button and select the Gradien, Texture and Pattern tabs. You can even import a photograph under the picture tab. When you're done, Ok should be clicked twice.

Excel 97 offers 16 levels of Undo. Click on the drop-down menu next to the Undo arrow on the standard toolbar, and select the action or actions you wish to undo.

Magic Editing('97):

To edit a chart, first select the chart you want to edit and choose the chart menu to see a list of the wizard dialog boxes. Now select the one you want to work with.

Capture Web data('97):

To open Web-based spreadsheet, type or paste its URL into the File Open dialog box. Now select and copy the cells you want, in your spreadsheet.
