What is Goth...?
Affectations do not a goth make. Jesus was not Goth!

I see all these kids today, running around wearing black, sporting ankhs, listening to garbage like Maralyn Manson, and calling themselves goth (as if white trash like MM could ever understand true Goth culture.) This is not goth, merely the affectations of gothdom. Let me explain, briefly, what my (not-so) humble opinion of Goth is.

First, understand, that the true Goth subculture has 3 distincive bases:

Narcissism
The adoration of the self.
Hedonism
The love of pleasure
Nihilism
The doctrine that all values are baseless and that nothing is knowable or can be communicated.

Another aspect of the goth subculture is a certain amount of artistic literacy and philosophical refinement. Remember, the original goths were part of the punk movement, but were too literate and refined to be common street rabble. Early forebears of the goth movement include the likes of George Gordon (Lord Byron), Percy Bysshe Shelley, Mary Wolstonecraft, as well as Blake, Yeats, and (of course) Crowley. And let us not leave out the indomitable Edgar Allen Poe.

Musically speaking, the goth movement was founded by bands such as Bauhaus, Joy Division, and Siouxie and the Banshees (Robert Smith insists that the Cure is not a goth band, but truth will tell, no?) and perfected by others such as The Legendary Pink Dots, Red Lorry Yellow Lorry, The Sisters of Mercy, The Fields of the Nephilim, and the list goes on.

The point I am making, is that, as the caption above suggests, affectations do not a Goth make. The black clothes, Kohl eyeliner, and ankhs are part and parcel of the Goth fashion, and probably will remain so, but they are not the defining points of the true Gothic subculture.

Something I've begun to notice, with alarming frequency in recent months, is the advent of something called "Christian Goth". This is an abomination. Christianity is in direct opposition to the morality of the Gothic subculture.

As I stated in the above article, the Goth morality is defined by three philosophies: Narcissism, Hedonism, and Nihilism. Christians do not believe in adoration of self, to the contrary, they believe in the adoration of Christ. Christians do not subscribe to physical pleasures, in fact, they denounce such things as sinful or evil. Christians are definitely not Nihilists...They believe in an after life and a morality which is strictly defined in the words of their "holy" scriptures as those of us who do not subscribe to such bullshit know only too well.

You may wear black, wear silver jewelry and listen to gothic music, but if your lord and saviour is a dead Jewish mystic, YOU ARE NOT GOTH!!!

Let's look at some basic facts...Did Jesus subscribe to any (let alone all three) of the Gothic tenets? Did Jesus read Poe? Did Jesus have any fashion sense at all? The answer to the above questions are a resounding NO, therefore Jesus was not Goth. This being the case, how could any of his followers possibly be of the Goth persuasion. Answer: They can't. In fact, to claim to be a "Christian Goth" is to be a hypocrite on both counts.

I guess all of you "Christian" Goths can go boohooing back to mommy and daddy now and find some other movement to subvert with your message of slavery. Better yet, why don't you all just Go to Heaven and leave the rest of us in peace.
