THE PARENT TIMES 3/9/98

Dear Parents and Friends,

The big news for most parents this week is the CAR SEAT RECALL of Evenflo models 207 and 492. The reports I've read on- and offline state there's no danger when your child's in the car. The problem lies with the car seats' handles, which have (on 176 occasions) spontaneously released outside of the automobile.

These car seats are extremely popular -- you might even have one. Need some support? Stop in at our BABIES AND SAFETY bulletin board at: http://boards.pathfinder.com/cgi-bin/webx?13@^[email protected]/1

On the board, Parent Survival Specialist Sherry Reinhardt, R.N. shares some wise words for parents who are understandably concerned, "Parents obviously respond very strongly because they've been doing something to keep their child safe, and it's unnerving to find your child might have been in danger. So what should you do? Well, if you have an Evenflo car seat, especially those models, you need to call the company. In the meantime, carry your car seat with both hands until it's repaired. With any car seat, during transport, always make sure your child is buckled in."

You can reach Evenflo at 1/800-203-2138 or 1/800-233-5921.

Fortunately, my own daughter is past the age of hauling her around in her car seat outside of the auto. But, as Sherry recommends, we should all spread the word through bulletin boards, emails, and even old-fashioned phone calls.
I say, "Be safe and don't panic." And do let us know how you're coping.

ALERT: Kolcraft infant car seats

April 1997

Certain infant car seats from Kolcraft Enterprise may have a misaligned retainer clip, which could cause an infant to slip out of the seat in an accident. The clip holds the crotch strap in place. The seats, produced between March 4 and September 30, 1996, are: Travel-About, Plus 5, Plus 4, and Infant Rider, starting with model numbers 138xx or 368xx; and Travel-About, Plus 5, with model numbers 13833, 13842, or 13852. If you own one of these seats, call Kolcraft at 1-800-453-7673 for instructions on how to realign the clip. You'll also be sent a label to place next to the clip, which indicates it is in the proper position.

1. Turn seat upside down. The retainer clip should be to your left and shoulder strap to your right. Check to see if the clip lies flat against the slot.

2. If it doesn't, pull the clip out of the "well" by pushing the buckle strap through the hole from the top side of the seat. Turn the clip to the correct position.

3. Pull the strap from the top untin the clip lies flat against the slot.
