For those who think you don't know Bettie Page, well perhaps the name
eludes you, but her image you certainly know. It's on TV every week, it's
in children's comics and animated films... it's Xena: Warrior Princess.
Xena, the statuesque, raven-haired beauty, with
bangs, piercing blue eyes, dressed in leather, leather boots, and carrying
a whip is the direct descendant of Bettie. The producers even made Lucy
Lawless (the actress who plays Xena) dye her naturally sandy-blonde hair
black to play the part. Bettie fans can see bits of Bettie pics and films
in every Xena episode... the fight scenes, especially with her beautiful
blonde-haired nemesis, Callisto, seem to be directly choreographed by Irving
Klaw himself, and the underlying lesbian subtext of the show fits perfectly
with many of the short bondage films Bettie did. No
doubt, Bettie's legacy lives on in many other shows, comic books, movies,
models, and stories... but none comes as close as Xena: Warrior Princess.
