Discussion of Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard
To understand the symbolism in the Cherry Orchard, know and understand the following concepts in Russian history:

1. tsarism (czarism)
2. the emanicipation of the serfs
3. Marxism
4. Darwinism
5. the Decadent Movement
6. Bolshevism

Respond to Fir's statement, "As I recall, everyone was very pleased, but what they were pleased about they'd know idea themselves." Fir shows how several new problems were created with the abolition of serfdom. Compare this to Lopakhin's viewpoint: "Oh, it was a good life all right. At least there were plenty of floggings."

Repond to the following statement: The Cherry Orchard refuses to glorify the changes sweeping across the country, but it also offers no glorification of the faithful servant who endures in the midst of change.
How is the cherry orchard used as a symbol? (of Russian history)

(still developing this one Bridget!!---but read anyway & see what you think)

Orchard in bloom = height of production...source of $ for OWNER...and what of the serfs?

Emancipation = productivity waned...floundering society forbidden slavery but unable.....memory of OLD....where at least great VISUAL beauty existed...

No productivity+emancipated generation reaches maturity=NEW ORDER

destroy natural beauties...not refined...hardworking...
