Elegant Lady's Hat Class
Supplies
- - 1" styrofoam ball
- - 2"x2" piece of dip and drape (sometimes called drape and shape)
- - 2"x2" pieces of silk ( can be compatable colors)
- - 4"x4" piece of net
- silk ribbon for flowers and bows
- bunka for trim and leaves.
- feathers
- Sharp scissors
- Aleenes tacky glue
- pins
- needle and thread
- Dish of water.
Please do not cut out anything !!
- Take 3 pins and put them In the bottom of the styrofoam ball so the ball will stand up.
This will be your hat stand. See Diagram A
- Get the 2 pieces of silk and your scissors ready. we will have to work fairly quickly for the
next step.
- Dip the piece of dip and drape in the water and lay 1 piece of silk on each side of it. Make
sure that all the silk gets wet- but not soaking just enough so that the fabric is evenly wet
and there are no dry spots.
- Lay the pattern on top and cut out the hat. Hat pattern is 1 3/4" diameter across, and top to bottom
is 1 7/8" diameter.
- Pin the hat on top of the styrofoam ball and tilt the back of it up and put pins behind the tift
to support it. Shape the front anyway you want but do want the back fairiy high. Pin as
needed to hold the shape. See Diagram B and and
- Let dry and prepare your roses and bows. See Supplement
- Cut out the net and gather along edge A Pull up tightly ( this does not have to be neat or
even stitches) and tie off. Set aside.
- If your hat is dry unpin it from your stand and trim it if desired. Make sure to keep some lift
in the back or the net will not go on right.
- Unravel the bunka for the trim (the green is
for your leaves.) and glue it on the very edge of your hat. To unravel bunka just pull one end. It will look kind of ruffley.
- Hold the tied piece of net at the base of the bend -See Diagram C- and fold the net over
the back of the hat -See diagram D -and and mark it where the back bends up. Exactly on the
other side of where the knot 15. See Diagram E
- and
- Gather the net where it is marked in a slightly curved shape-See gather line B on net pattern-Pull up and gather stitches but do not tie off.
- Glue the first knot down to the front of the hat.
- Adjust the back gathers until the net looks pretty going over the back of the hat. Tie off and
glue.
- Trim the net shorter if desired.
- Arrange roses and feathers -See supplement for feather ~ and when you
like them glue them down. I usually put the roses starting at the middle back and curving
down one side. Feathers can be laying on their side and curving over the edge of the hat
or can be standing up-play with them and see what you like- this is your creation and the
ways of decorating are endles. There are a small dove that you can buy at the craft
stores that can be painted and look great on these hats. ribbon bows can be put on top
too as well as more net can be added to the top if desired.
Flower layouts.
- Grab your large bow at the knot and pinch it so that all the loops are going the same way.
- Glue the large bow in the back where the net is glued to the back of the hat.
- Make your hat pin by using a slender pin and put the pin through the tiny crystal beads. I
put some glue on the pin -just enough to hold the crystal beads. Glue the peari or stone on
the top of the pin. Let dry!!
Pin hat on doll and enjoy!!

You can make as many bows the same size as you want to I have made bows only 1/4 wide
using 1/16 Inch ribbon
LARGE BOW
- Make this bow by putting your pins approximately 1. apart.
- Wrap the ribbon several times around the pins- See diagram 5.
- Cut another piece of ribbon.
- Put the new piece of ribbon under and around the ribbon on the pins. See diagram 8
- Tie a knot in front.

ROSES
Make a rose tool by cuffing off the top of the eye of a tapestry needle. insert the needle into a
piece of wood or cork.
The dotted line on Diagram AA is where glue goes.
- Insert the end of the ribbon in the tool and roll along the glue me. This makes the center.
- Turn the ribbon back. up, and over to the front- See diagram BB.
- Pull ribbon up close to the rose and put a dot of glue where you want the petal to attach.
- Continue doing this for as many petals as you want. Rememher to always do a add number
of petals as even numbers will make a square rose.
Roses will be very awkward to you at first- Keep doing it and all of a sudden it will feel right.
