For the
past several years, I have been teaching theatre arts at the high school
level. Teaching theatre is very time consuming and leaves little
time for anything else. We usually rehearse on Sunday afternoons
plus Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday evenings. Most Saturdays are spent
at competitions. So, you see, there is really little time left for
much else!
To top it all off, I usually do several shows a year, in order to give ample opportunities to my students. In a normal year, I start with a play about the second week of school. The kids get together over the summer and dedicate their vacations to putting together a show. October is a time for our annual Halloween Program. November means the Texas State Thespian Festival, so we always try to take a show to that, too! (For the past two years our shows from the state festival have been invited to perform at the International Thespian Society Festival!) Every other year I do a winter musical alternating with a full length production. Each December, my beginning acting class prepares a children's show for all of the elementary students in our district. After the first of the year, it is time to begin working on our one act play for competition. We also put together an annual showcase of our talent, and occasionally we offer a spring show, too. So how do I manage to juggle all of that??? Well, it has taken me years of trial and error and tons of workshops, but I think I have it worked out.... It is the intention of this page to share ideas on how to simplify your program, stay focused, and still have a life outside of the theater! |
