A Precious Gift
On January 13, 1998 Kathi Copeland of Water Valley, Ky. will receive a gift of hope. You see, Kathi has a rare hereditary kidney disorder (distal renal tubule acidosis). Although this condition is so rare that her doctor says he can count on his hands how many cases he's seen. Her sister, Misty Ann died of the same disorder along with heart complications at age four.
Kathi's case did not seem to be as severe as her sister's. Until about age 15. Then began the frequent, monthly trips for treatment to Memphis 120 miles away.
Although she was in and out of hospitals over the years. Kathi, now 30, was able to lead a fairly normal life. The past 48 months have proven how quickly a disease like this can progress. Kathi now has more than 300 stones in each of her kidneys. The only hope is a kidney transplant; and soon.
Kathi's uncle, Tommy Puckett of Union City, Tn. promised her several years ago that if the time came when she needed a donor he would do it. Many times people make promises like this with all good intentions. Tommy is following through. The tissue typing and other tests have been completed. Tommy is ready to 'save his niece's life.' Tommy was quoted in a recent interview as saying, '...the kidney belongs to God anyway, He's just been letting me use it.'
This story will have a happy ending. It doesn't make the real life struggles much easier. While insurance will cover alot of the costs of the medical treatment, Kathi's and Tommy's families will need to be away from home for the week long post operation hospital stay. Tommy, a self employed truck driver will not be able to work for two to three months after the surgery. The expense of owning the truck will still be there.
A fund has been established to help with these expenses at Fulton Bank, State Line Road, Fulton, KY 42041 (502) 472-2711. Mark your donation for "Kathi Copeland Transplant Fund"
