Distant Songs
They play back in my mind each day,
the distant songs ring through.
Happy songs, and sad melodies,
all filled with me and you.
Joyful sound of a life we lived,
together you and I.
How could we have known back then,
how fast some love songs die.
Time went on and we both grew,
apart, as it turned out.
All those years, all the while
what was it all about?
For a time, I was your true love,
the woman of your dreams.
Life took hold and led you off,
away from me, it seems.
Life sang a different song to me,
one I could not ignore.
It sang to me a song of hope,
that I could live once more.
The choice to end our song was tough,
it meant a change for all.
To leave the place where a family grew,
to close the concert hall.
For years, I tried to keep the tunes
of happiness alive.
Without the harmony of love,
how could our song survive?
Tune the sound, adjust the tone,
whatever it would take.
To keep the lyrics in perfect rhyme,
so no one's heart would break.
As time went on, we sang off key,
I had to make a choice.
To sing songs only I could hear,
in someone else's voice.
Or break free from that sad band,
put an end to all the strife.
Write new songs, begin again,
seek my orchestra of life.
The distant songs of yesterday
remind me to be strong.
New lyrics, tunes and melodies
are slowly coming along.
