Chapter 13 / NAUSICAA - Who is Gerty?: Hello all Apart from hiking in the alps, have read another chapter in Ulysses. Now who is Gerty Macdowell? What is she doing in Ulysses? Chandra There was an anticipation of Gerty in Wandering Rocks where she sees the cavalcade as a fashionable event. Her family and the Dignams are socially involved. She is thus securely fastened to the book. She is also the equivalent of Nausicaa but in a comic way. Rather than Odysseus exposing himself to Nausicaa it is Nausicaa who in Joyce's book exposes herself to Odysseus. What he is doing is obvious to Gerty so Bloom in a sense is naked to her and sexually involved in a way that does not reflect Homer to whom nudity was not necessarily a situation with sexual implications. The social gaffe created by Homer's nude Odysseus has about it a curiously dreamlike quality and raises the question (irrelevant perhaps for our purposes) of the antiquity of this aspect of psychological occurrences.
