Kiri, Jay, Chandra -- We'll see how long this post takes .... I was feeling relieved that my last post vanished and then, voila! reappearance. Go figure... Great comments all. Perhaps a more thoughful response from me tomorrow (along w/ list of books promised) but tonight just a quick couple of points -- Kiri, I did not make myself clear. I was not moping that Joyce has given unsympathetic characters, just noting that as readers some of us (you and I in particular) seemed to have more sympathy for the characters than he did. How this is possible is open to debate endlessly and probably fruitlessly.... I think (I'm sure) my error is in the haphazard way I have gone at _Dubliners_. In an effort to pull my weight on this list I read the first few stories AND THEN SKIPPED to "Mother" and "Grace." Not a good idea with an author who takes such careful reading as Joyce, but I was trying to help Chandra get through the book before leaving for India. BTW, where are Rasik of the Intro's, Roopesh, et al? I hope we can keep this list going as I love having company for this adventure in Joyce-land. Very intrigued by the 3 graces of Jay> I must reread! Till then best to all, cj gillen
Gillen, About the stories in Dubliners. I read Araby first and fell in love with that story, with the author who could write such an exquisite story, I felt. Sisters was very intriguing, Eveline was touching. The problems started with Counterpoints, and then peaked at Ivy day where I just could not find my bearing, and was not much better with Grace. That is what I thought. And this is what Harold Bloom writes in his book of critical interpretations of Dubliners: "After the Race is a weak story, and An Encounter and Araby do not reread well." That is for the experts opinion. I still don't understand Ivy day as we did not have much discussion on it. Grace, I have learnt to appreciate, thanks to your, Kiri's and Jay's contributions and explanations. Well, yes, where are you Rasik? We don't need to ask, "Where are you, Maureen, you who should have been the leading light of this list?". We know she is doing well. Chandra End of Grace! |
