Joyce in Zurich:

Hello all!

I have not read more of Ulysses but have read some very interesting things about Joyce in a recently released German book called "Berühmte und vergessene Tote auf Zürichs Friedhöfen" (The famous and forgotten dead in Zurich's cemeteries) by Daniel Foppa. I thought of sharing it with you all. There are two interesting things in the writeup on Joyce.

(a) The book has an interesting photograph of a statue of Joyce on the spot where he is buried, with Erza Pound standing in front of it. (So the photograph must have been taken before 1972.) He holds a cigarette in one hand and an open book in the other but is staring ahead. The statue was erected on 16 June 1966. Nora's remains were buried next to him in 1966. Though she died in 1951, there was no place free next to Joyce till 1966. The writer of the book comments how would Joyce have reacted to this statue is a question by itself.

(b) In 1940 when Joyce wanted to come to Switzerland, the canton police denied him permission to enter Switzerland. They had written to the secretary of the Swiss Writers' Association asking him whether James Joyce is known to them an internationally acknowledged writer - (this was 18 years after the publication of Ulysses) - and whether he would be a threat (competitor) to the local writers. Many friends of Joyce including Klöti, the mayor of Zürich supported Joyce's application, and the visa was granted finally, only after a guarantee was given.

Ulysses will accompany me on my summer vacation. Hopefully I will be able to enjoy the multilevel writing, as you say Bob, in a stressfree mood.

More when I return in August.

Have a nice summer!

Chandra
