Emotional Discharge | ||||||||||||||||||
The first thing that seems to get me writing is any emotional changes in my life. Death, birth, marriage, divorce, and raising children, all of these things are common occurances. Each of us have experience with these or other common adventures in life. We can accept them, we can mope around about them, we can celebrate them, and we can learn from them. Regardless each of us will react in a diffent way. I belong to a writing group, the Louisville Poets' Guild. (See Link) Each week we choose a group of words and do a timed writing. It is just amazing to me how with the same 4 or 5 words, each person travels with those words down different paths. I tend to write what I feel. Most of my poetry comes from my emotion experiences. Whether I love or hate, feel anger or happiness. This is what I want to portray in my writing. I began writing at an early age. Words flowed easily on paper. While I was a painfully shy child, on paper, I took on a new personality. I married young, too young, and unfortunately, to a very unfupportive and abusive man. He drove the words away from me for a long time. Try as I would nothing seemed to come. A dear friend began incorporating writing into his Sunday School lessons and, Thank God, my inspirations came back. To my surprise, I found that after all these years away from the abusive marriage, I still had anger. Where I had tried to hide it from myself, there it was, lurking in the back of my mind. Since I began to get all of this emotion on paper, I can feel it flowing from mind. Though not there completely, I have discovered through my "Therapy Writing" that I am much more at peace with myself. Since I have begun to read some of my poems in public, I have discovered that I am not the only one who experiences these things. The Low Self Esteem and feeling of inadequacies come with the territory. These days, I am happily remarried to a man who supports my writing, though sometimes I think my emotional discharge worries him. I am a secretary and out of my four children, I have one left at home. I am now trying to decide what I want to do when I grown up. And writing shows me my directions. I won't bore you with anymore details about me, but if you have any questions, feel free to email me at [email protected]
What Gets Your Juices Flowing
Above I shared with you how I started writing. Tell me your story. Your story might just be what someone needs to hear to find their own inspriation.
Write, Write, Write and When In Doubt Write
There is no advise that I can give you that can beat a shoe ad. Just Do It!!! It doesn't matter what you write, just start with a pen and paper and see where your mind takes you. And Please, don't be afraid to share. This is how we learn. And lastly don't be critical of your own work. Do not start out with an apology. It is too easy to do. This is advise that I personally need to remind myself of. Any thing you write gives you starting place. You can always change what you've written, but if you don't so something, you can never improve.
