What does the Group
do?
The group was formed in May 2000 to
promote discussion of new socialist approaches to the writing and teaching
of history. We are concerned to develop an understanding of the past
from the point of view of the working class, explaining history from both
'above' and 'below'. Since we are concerned with developing socialist
approaches to history, we wish to promote not only discussion of
work in progress and recently published work, but also developments in
the practice of teaching history at any level.
We are an open group, with members
from outside academia, as well as professional historians.
As an initial activity, we are holding
a meeting in June 2000 (details to be announced), to discuss "How Socialist
Teachers can use the AS/A2 system.
We also intend to develop a programme
of seminars on new socialist approaches to history. A mailing list
may also be set up. |
