Welcome to the Eastern Magnet's 1998 Urbanism Website!

This website contains two of our 1998 urbanism projects, "Building a Better Metropolis: Revitalizing the Slums," and "Oral History." These were created from June 4-11, 1998, at Eastern Middle School in Silver Spring, MD, by the Humanities and Communications Magnet students, as the culminating project of the school year.

The urbanism conference, which took place on June 12, was the final presentation of these projects. Students studied many aspects of urban life and development, and created numerous projects on the subject. This included plays set in the area of our school in different periods of American history, studies on the ecology of the Chesapeake Bay, video documentaries on issues facing urban areas, multimedia presentations on how to improve D.C. life, and more. This site contains the two web page projects, which were part of the World Studies project.

"Revitalizing the Slums" is a page about the problems of some low-income neighborhoods in the District of Columbia and a proposal to improve them and revitalize the city. "Oral History" contains transcriptions of interviews with D.C. residents who are immigrants or migrants from rural areas.
