What should a promise be?
A group of words with gallantry
That once are said and then set free
To hold no meaning for you or me
For whom this promise was to be
That's not what a promise means to me.

A hope to keep a word to me
'Til some happier venture then you see,
The word forgotten that was made to me
And you race off, ignoring it, happily
That's not what a promise means to me.

What should a promise be?
It's a statement that's given carefully
Regardless of what should appear to be
And will never be broken, reluctantly
Or ignored and forgotten in time, you see
That's what a promise means to me.
