My Retreat

Just for a little while I left the rush,
The noise, the perplexity
Of this wonderous world of ours,
To meditate upon a soul of God me.

In the silence of the quiet halls
I felt the comfort of thoughtful once like me
Who came to speak in silence to their God
Of problems, troubles and this life to be.

I walked about the grounds and saw God's work
And man's combined in radiant flowers
Memorare's to Mary, St. Joseph, the little Flower.
With this unily alone, I could meditate for hours.

I sat upon a rock beside the waters
Where rippling waves washed into shore
And thought about Christ's sermon from the boat
I wished it could be that way once more.

Overhead the cloudy skies parted
To let the sun shine through now and then
Like life that darkens with care and trouble
Then brightens up with love again.

My thoughts were stopped for a while
To say the rosary and the litany at the shrine
To meditate upon the part that Mary played
In this great creation
That her God had made.

At the shores again I paused once more
In the distance the sound of a plane, the motor of a boat,
The crickets, birds, a train whistle
All these compared to God's love seemed so remote.

How small a soul in this creation seems to be
And yet God's love reaches out to each one of us
Individually.  How much he must love his people!
His compassion for us as we fret and fuss.

We learn what I guess we all have known
To live like Christ and help others do the same.
For life has a definite purpose love.
It is not a shiftless endless game.

There's so much work that each of us must do
Feed the hungry, clothe and house the needy,
Help to bring ourselves, the sinners
Back to God.  We must a good example be.

Back at the waters edge again I sit
To the west storm clouds are gathering and thunder rumbles
All around me in silence people walk or sit
They don't seem to mind the coming storm a bit.

Could we but carry back this tranquil state
To face the storms of life to come
Thank God I was born a Catholic
Thank God we were given the Pope to guide us on.

When I'm sad let me help God's people more
When I'm worried help me turn more to God
When temptation strikes help me think of young ones I must lead.
Help my faith grow more and more for my Lord.
