Dark City review (Jan/Feb 2004, English translation and remarks by C.O.D.)
Here is the next creation of mysterious inhabitant of Moscow
(Russia) going under the weird name Cynoptik. His mystery is
mainly in never writing his home address, thus creating an
illusion of living him abroad. Which seems misleading.
[for those who cannot catch the sense: for some
Russian sentences there exist no proper English translation - C.O.D.]
Another enygma is the non-standardness of his creations.
This time, his work reminds of the most desperate compositions
of Belmez. Especially from the album "Berzerker".
[I remember good words about Belmez in some e-zines, but
never heard the sounds... this is my fault... in the future
DeathFrost must sound different! - C.O.D.]
And the final of the first track is probably borrowed from Bethlehem.
However, the idea seems not very original and therefore may arise
in different experimentating minds independently.
[I am sorry, I will never use such cheap tricks
anymore - C.O.D.]
In general, Cynoptik himself appeared to be even more strange
than his music. At least, the content of his website shows that
he apparently has some problems with logic reasoning.
For example, first he denies the importance of money but,
a couple of lines later, starts to itemize the amounts he
paid for instruments, thus implying that "low budget means
less quality".
[the above is rather imprecise ... and it cannot
be verified since the webpage cited has recently been critically
updated - C.O.D.]
And the very fact of existence of a website written in English
contradicts with the image of "an independent musician who spits
upon the fame".
[ups! the above was derived from another Russian
sentence which has no sensible English equivalent - C.O.D.]
Nevertheless, the album presents an excellent example of
alternative and independent musics in the good meaning
of these words.
[whatever the meaning be, DeathFrost do have nothing
common with any USA-styled "alternative" shit - C.O.D.]
