1999 JACKIE CHAN HONG KONG TOUR
MORE TOUR DOINGS | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
Jackie and I Willie and I One of the "expeditions" I enjoyed taking were frequent trips to Hong Kong Island to search out the cultural venues and explore the island delights, such as climbing the mid-level shops escalators which was rather like "metaphysical mountain climbing" all the way from the Star Ferry to Conduit Street (see 'Ladder Languages') and attended a French Film Festival where I covered an A. Robbe-Grillet film for the "Onager: A Cyberjournal of the Arts." Co-director of 'Le bruit qu'on rend fou' and friend Ken Lo and I Ken plays a monk in a film he is making in Shanghai. He is former kickboxing champ of Thailand. The mid-level escalators which rise from near the Star Ferry Terminal high up the side of the hill end at Conduit Street and are themselves a conduit for thousands of persons who shop, eat,and sight ,see up the mountain. it took me approximately 40 minutes each way. Some more reflections on HK will follow on the next page.
FURTHER REFLECTIONS | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
Here are Susan, Ruth and I eating in Jackie's restaurant "Fisherman's Wharf" prior to the busride to the studios where "Gorgeous" is being filmed. On a walk along the Promenade in Kowloon (looking across to Hong Kong Island) four young students with a tape recorder stopped me and asked if I would mind doing an interview for their english class of my reflections on Hong Kong. I said I would if I cold take a photo of them. So they posed prettily. This turned out to be a good preliminal practice for an interview with journalism students at the Chinese College of Hong Kong. Frances guided Steve, Joy and I to their campus via subway train, regular train and bus. We watched parts of Jackie Chan's film "Rush Hour" and discussed it as well as aspects of Chinese culture in films, paticularly in western films. Aterwards we were treated to dinner in the school cafeteria and were conveyed home by the boys via bus train and taxi. Among students in the photo (taken by me are Billy, Frances, Andy and Ken.
