Subject: [evol-psych] Richard Dawkins on 'Independent' article Date: Wed, 13 Feb 2002 13:33:30 -0000 From: "Ian Pitchford"Organization: http://human-nature.com/ To: >From Richard Dawkins Wednesday, February 13, 2002 12:56 PM A number of contributions to your bulletin board, amounting to a 'thread', are in reaction to an article purporting to be by me in The Independent of yesterday, Darwin Day 2002. This article, 'Our Big Brains can Overcome Our Selfish Genes', was not written by me. I did not authorise it, my permission was neither given nor sought, and I was utterly surprised to see it when I opened my morning paper yesterday. It turns out to be a brief summary, made by a journalist, of my Inaugural Lecture to the Environment Foundation in London on 14th November 2001. Given that he had to achieve a tenfold reduction in the word count he didn't do a bad job, and I can't be sure that those who misunderstood his version won't misunderstand mine too. Nevertheless, I hope you will allow me to mention that my own original text, 'Sustainability Doesn't Come Naturally: A Darwinian Perspective on Values' is posted at the Foundation's website:- http://www.environmentfoundation.net/richard-dawkins.htm All best wishes Richard Dawkins
