After the fire in 1661, queen Hedwig Eleonora decided that a new palace was to be built. After her death the new palace was given to her grand daughter, princess Ulrica Eleonora (later queen), she expanded the art collection. Then it was given to queen Lovisa Ulrica as a wedding present, during her time the palace had it's grand era. In 1777 she was forced to leave the palaces, because her son, Gustaf III, wanted to live here. No bigger changes was made until king Oscar I and queen Josephine's reign. Now it's the permanent residence of the Swedish royal family.
