"Jeans"

by Emily Newman

I'm gonna put on my jeans
And slip into an attitude
I'm gonna veil
The scars and wounds
Beneath a mask
Of make-up

I'll disguise my eyes
And let them dance
In dim lights and laughter
I'm not gonna let
Anyone
See me or know me

I'm gonna act snobby
Attempting to hide
The hurt that invades me
Always growing
Always growing
Filling me with bitterness and tears

I'm gonna hide myself tonight
From prying curiosity
I won't be on display
The elusive goddess
The ailing child
We are the same,
You know

I'm gonna slip out of myself
If only for a few hours
To become what I am not
I'm gonna put on my jeans
And slip into an attitude
