January 31st, 1998
The agenda for the meeting held on January
31, 1998 from 12:00 to 2:00, included
a discussion of the group's progress since September of 1997. The
members also discussed the upcoming events for
the following months of February through
May. After reviewing the planned occasions, the youths had a
protracted debate on a given situation. The situation
was about being stranded on a desolate
island with the choice of using or not using certain resources
such as meat, vegetation, and other available
supplies. The members were placed into
groups where they participated actively in contriving different
means of handling the situation. After they
put their minds together to discuss
their opinions, the entire assembly came back into one group to share
their plans. After further discussion of the topic,
the members were given the Jain viewpoint
on how to handle the situation at hand. In this way, the group
related the incident to Jainism. This meeting
had an overall good response.
February 15th, 1998
On February 15, 1998, the youth group had
its second meeting of the new year. Again,
we updated the members on the agenda for the upcoming events of the
year. In the course of this meeting, the productive
members participated actively in a
thought-provoking debate on the assimilation of Asian Indians in
the United States. The members discuss whether
or not these immigrants should change
their behaviors and attitudes because the views of society are
different from theirs. This discussion aroused
much debate in the students who had
an exuberant time participating. The response of the youths was very
positive.
