cover If this were just a book about making kites, it would be a great one, since it gives designs for about 50 kites, from simple-to-make projects to more challenging, award-winning, dazzling flying sculptures. But it is also about the joy of kite flying, kite lore and kite inventors -- and even history, science and philosophy.
Still, the main attraction is the pleasure of making your own. And here you get easy-to-follow instructions, with over 400 illustrations that cover every step from start to finish. You can make an Origami Flying Bug or a McDonald's Coffee Cup kite, stunt kites, kites with sectional tails and drogues, even one that looks like an immense dragonfly.
Or use the instructions as a starting point, and take off to design your own. All the kites are reliable fliers, all the tips work, all the accessories are worth looking into, and all the construction ideas have been tested.
Plus, to inspire your imagination, there's a collection of kites displayed in 16 pages of high-flying full color!
From the book's Preface
Although I enjoyed flying kites during the rest of that year, I forgot about kites and left California to seek new challenges.
San Francisco, ten year later: I was sitting in the living room of an apartment in the Filmore district when, for no apparent reason, some handed me a hefty-sized book called Synergetics: Explorations in the Geometry of Thinking by Buckmister Fuller. I had heard Fuller's name intermittently over the years in conjunction with his architectural invention of the geodesic dome.
I flipped open to a page randomly and there, staring back at me, were shapes and forms -familiar geometric patterns- I had nearly made out in a vision years ago. I thumbed through more pages. There where triangles, tethahedrons and elongated diamonds, as well as combinations of forms ranging from simple to complex. I yelled: This guy's drawings are kites!
