A Glimpse Into History
Welcome back to the Philippines, General Macarthur!

These pictures were taken at the Macarthur Park in Tacloban City, where General Douglas Macarthur made good his promise to return to the Philippines at the height of the Japanese occupation of the country.

More-than-life-size statues serve to remind the Filipinos of the event.

A View of Two Islands
The San Juanico Bridge connects the island of Leyte (where Tacloban is) with the island of Samar. A prominent feature of this bridge is its shape -- it forms the letter L from the island of Leyte and becomes a letter S from the midpoint between the two islands going onward to Samar.

An Evening With Madame
Leyte is the home province of Imelda Romualdez Marcos. Colleagues from Region VIII (Eastern Visayas) gladly posed with Mrs. Marcos and myself when the former Philippine first lady tendered a dinner for our group.
