Sarawak State Legislative Assembly which is officially
known as Dewan Undangan Negeri Sarawak (hereinafter referred to as
"the Dewan") was first established in Bintulu on 8th September,
1867. It is arguably the oldest Legislative Assembly in Malaysia. The
membership began with five official Members and 16 community leaders and
its number had grown over the years. The Dewan is now the largest State
Legislative Assembly in the country with 62 elected members. Generally,
the Dewan is the supreme authority as far as legislation on Sarawak
State's matters is concerned and provided that is not inconsistent with
the Federal Constitution.
