ACTIVISTS IN AUSTRALIA AND FINLAND JOIN OCT. 18 PROTESTS

On Saturday, October 18, human rights activists will join in an international mobilization in support of Nike production workers. Local activists are urged to organize leafleting at stores selling Nike products in their community. So far, activists in the following 9 countries have indicated that they are planning to participate: Canada, the United States, Australia, Italy, Finland, The Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland and England. Campaign for Labor Rights recently received the following two messages notifying us of plans for participation in the October 18 mobilization:

FROM AUSTRALIA:

Action in Solidarity with Indonesia and East Timor (ASIET)

P.o. Box 458, Broadway 2007, Australia

Tel: 61-02-96901032 Fax: 61-02-6901381

Web Page: http://www.peg.apc.org/~asiet/

ASIET Australia would be very happy to participate in the October 18 international day of protest against NIKE. We would also like to receive your Nike action packet via email. We are planning to launch a campaign in Australia in particular around Nike in Indonesia and we are interested in linking up with your activities and finding out more. Most of our solidarity work is with the struggle for democracy in Indonesia and for self-determination for East Timor—hence our interest in Nike in Indonesia. Any help is much appreciated. We have a national ASIET conference August 23 and 24 where we will be discussing the sort of national campaign we want to run. We have committees all across Australia and there is broader support for such a campaign as well as we will want to use it to call on the Australian people to boycott Nike products. I am aware that Community Aid Abroad is also involved here in Australia.

FROM FINLAND:

I would like to [receive] your Nike action packet via e-mail. I’m a member of a Finnish syndicalist group "Solidaarisuus" and we’ll also participate the international solidarity day for Nike production workers 18.10.

RESOURCES:
