Marcus Crassus was a very wealthy man. He had made a fortune, but what he really wanted was military glory.
In 73 a slaverebellion led by the greek slave named Spartacus broke out.
Crassus was asked to raise an army. He did and in 71 Spartacus forces were crushed. Crassus was hailed as the savior of
Rome, and now he could start entering politics.
Gnaeus Pompeius also known as Pompeius Magnus ( The Great ) was also a hero in 71. In 77 and 72 he had struck down
rebellions that could have brought an end to the Republic.
In 72 Pompeius returned to Rome with his army, and he expressed his wish to run for consul. Pompeius was too young to
run for consul, but when Crassus in 71 returned from the slaverebellion with his army, the two men met and agreed to work
with each other.
Now the senate had the choice to elect Pompeius consul or fight two armies.
Pompeius became consul at the next election.
Gajus Julius Caesar was a young man who had made himself vary popular by spending more money than he could afford.
As a result of that he was in dept, when he was given the command of the forces in Gaul.
The Gauls gave Caesar enormous amounts of gold, and made him a very wealthy man.
Caesar was loved by his soldiers for beeing an outstanding commander.
Caesar also was a good politician, and this helped him a lot.
