TITLE OF PIECE: Hansel & Gretel

EDITION: One of a kind

ARTIST: Jeanne K. J. Weiland

DIMENSIONS: Base 10 x 7 inches

                        Chimney height 7 inches

                        Gretel 2 1/2 inches

                        Witch 4 1/2 inches

MATERIALS: Mixed media. The dolls and their clothing are of polymer clay. The hair on all three characters is lamb's wool. Both cage and chimney are constructed of Wisconsin cherry, and the cobblestones are individually made from polymer. Real mortar is used between the floor-tile fireplace bricks and between the cobblestones. Chimney mortar is terra-cotta dyed water putty. The soot, ashes, and coals in the oven interior are on permanent loan from the artist's own fireplace.

ARTIST NOTES: The scene depicted is, of course, from the traditional Hansel and Gretel fairy tale. It is this grim scene that most impressed and dismayed me as a child. It was a bit disconcerting to me to have both of my own children see my face in that of the witch. I don't know whether it was their comment on my parenting or a calculated attempt to get my goat...
