TITLE OF PIECE: Iceman

EDITION: One of a kind

ARTIST: Jeanne K. J. Weiland

DIMENSIONS: Ice fisherman 15 inches, seated

Ice 1 inch thick

Base 18 inches across

MATERIALS: Mixed media. head, hands and boots are polymer clay. The body is a fiber-wrapped wire armature, hair is rooted lamb's wool. The ice is sheet acrylic, and the clothing is all natural fiber. The sweater is hand knit on size zero needles. Like all good housewives, I cannot throw out a usable container; the bucket the fisherman sits on is a recycled frosting container.

ARTIST NOTES: My poor husband was totally disgusted by this doll long before it was finished. Assorted body parts cluttered the kitchen for months. Perhaps the most aggravating thing he had to deal with was my habit of keeping unbaked heads in the refrigerator during hot weather, thus preventing distortion in the features. At the time I sculpted Iceman's head, the most readily available container for storage was an empty Cool Whip bowl. More than once I heard a late night yowl as my better half went looking for a snack. And once, I am told, the old fisherman nearly went along as my fellows hastily grabbed for their bait on the way to the canoe. In spite of their occasional protests, however, I enjoy wonderful support from my family- especially my husband. I wish all artists could have a cheering section as notable as the one I have. Thanks, guys!
