YES SCULPTURES OF EXTREMELY HUMANLIKE FIGURES THAT SEEM TO MOVE OR EVEN SPEAK TO SOME
Now that I'm "grown up", I can do what I want to do and be what I want to be. And I still find myself "wondering what I'll be when I grow up." (The less diplomatic members of the family mostly wonder IF I'll grow up!) All my life I have been, I am told, a terrible "goody-two-shoes". And since I STILL lack the nerve to to a lot of what I'd like to, I let my sculptures do all the inappropriate and unmannerly things I wish I could do.
Like take a bite out of each piece of candy in the entire box...or fry an egg on a clothes iron...or slice off the top of someone's head...
My children's initial reaction to the sculpture with the sliced-off head was, "Oh, neat...Oh, SICK! Mom, you need help." What they are perhaps too young to realize is that this piece WAS help. In "real life" I work in the business world. Many days are very stressful in the workplace, and finest therapy I've found to date for relieving that tension is to come home and rearrange "someone's" facial features. There is something eminently satisfying in gouging out eye sockets, moving a nose, or otherwise "rearranging" facial features.
In addition to the "therapy" the sculpture provides around our house, having Mom use the kitchen for purposes other than cooking and laundry has provided its share of unusual family stories. Assorted body parts clutter the kitchen regularly... perhaps the most aggravating thing my husband and children have to deal with is my habit of keeping unbaked heads in the refrigerator during hot weather, thus preventing distortion in the features. At the time I sculpted one gentleman's head, the most readily available container for storage was an empty Cool Whip bowl. More than once I heard a late night yowl as my better half went looking for a snack. And once, I am told, the old man nearly went along as my guys hastily grabbed for their bait on the way to the canoe. In spite of their occasional protests, however, I enjoy wonderful support from my family- especially my husband. I wish all artists could have a cheering section as notable as the one I have. Thanks, guys!
