Deaf Watch Newsletter Richard Roehm ( Address Snipped ) February 21, 1998 The Honorable Barbara Boxer United States Senate Washington, D.C. 20510-0505 Dear Senator Boxer: We need you to support the bipartisan McCain-Feingold campaign finance reform amendment to ban soft money, and to oppose efforts to kill the legislation with an obstructionist filibuster. I hear the U.S. Senate is scheduled to take up the McCain-Feingold soft money ban legislation on Monday, February 23. The McCain-Feingold bill ends the soft money system. Soft money is the huge, unregulated campaign contributions that come from corporate polluters, tobacco companies and other powerful and wealthy special interests. Ending the corrupt soft money system this year is a crucial first step in fixing the broken campaign finance system. People with disabilities have a 70% unemployment rate. Relative to other big lobbyists we're relatively poor. It's been noted that the well-heeled lobbyists create the "best Congress money can buy." For our constituency and for 95% of America campaign reform is essential if we are to have a level playing field! The disability community is one of the largest and most underrepresented groups in the State as well in the nation. We at Deaf Watch Newsletter thank you very much for your time to read this letter and anticipate your support. Sincerely, Richard Roehm Deaf Watch Newsletter
