Egyptian Art: The Great Flood

The Problem & Planning the Investigation

Your team of archeologists has been hired by the Egyptian government to help decide which Ancient Egyptian art works to save from a flood that will be caused by the construction of a new dam on the Nile river.
The new dam will irrigate a big part of the Nile river valley in Egypt, allowing the farmers there to grow food for the people living there.
The area to be flooded was once the home of many of the kings (pharaohs) of Egypt. Their tombs and the riches buried with them will be lost. The government does not have enough money to save all of the art treasures so you have been hired to investigate and help them decide.

You must decide whether to save :

 The Great Pyramids of Giza
 The Sphinx
The Tomb of Tutankhamen (King Tut)
A newly discovered tomb containing the mummies of over twenty different pharaohs.

Your team must research the decision and decide on only one of these Ancient Egyptian art sites. They also must present the decision to the Egyptian government and convince them they are right.

You will need to plan your search for good information in each of the categories to use to convince the government you are right with your decision.
What do you want to know about the art you have
selected in addition to the age, location, and description
of the art you have chosen?

Create a web of three additional questions about the
age, location, and description of the art you have chosen?

Doing Research & Comparing Sites

Create a separate entry on the table for each of the art sites listed above. In each table list:
1) What is the age of the art,
2) Where is the location of the art now (before the valley is flooded),
3) How would you describe the art including its:
 size
 what it is made of
 how it was made
4) A list and description of any other art found with it
5) One of your additional questions from the web of questions you created about the age, location, and description of the art you have chosen?

You will be finding information to help you decide. Your team will use different tools to locate ideas to help you. Your teacher will give you more directions, so listen carefully.

The information you find should be entered into the table you made. Other questions may be added to the table as they come up.

Use the information you have collected to decide which art to save. You must defend your decision with the information you have found or revise your search.

Presenting Research to Egyptian Officials

Your archeology team has looked at the information you have gathered and decided what their recommendation to the government will be. The team has an appointment with the top leaders of Egypt and you must present your findings. The government leaders are counting on your team to come up with the best decision, but you must convince them you are right before they will spend the millions of dollars it will take to save just your one chosen art site.

When you are ready to start creating your presentation visit with the Egyptian Minister of Art to find out what the government wants included.

Good Luck!!!
