Edgar Allan Poe
Edgar Allan Poe was a poet, short story writer and literary critic. He was born in Boston, the son of traveling actors. He became the ward of John Allan after his father deserted the family and his mother died in 1811. The lived in Great Britain for 5 years. Then Poe returned to Richmond and went to University of Virginia in 1826. But later on he and cousin, Virginia Clemm, who he married in 1836. Sadly Poe's years in 1840's were colored by economic hardship and ill health. Still, he kept on publishing stories. Then in 1841, his wife died of tuberculosis, Poe was also in poor health. At the same time, his writing decreased. He became a lecturer to support himself.
He finally found new hope when he met Elmira Roister who was his boyhood sweetheart. When they were young, they were a couple. But because of Elmira's father disliking Poe, they broke up. Elmira's father didn't like Poe. In the end, Elmira married to someone. This broke the heart of Poe and this cause him to start writing sad and haunting poems and stories. He also wrote a poem for Elmira.
After Poe met Elimira again, he was engaged to her. While on the way to the wedding, he stopped in Baltimore. He was found semiconscious and delirious outside a tavern. It was sad that the cause of the death was congestion of the brain. He was taking a little bit of drugs, which led him to wild behavior an out of control. This also causes him great imagination for his stories and poems, too. Edgar Allan Poe died on October 3, 1849. When he was alive, he wasn't famous at all. But when he was dead, he started getting famous. He wrote haunting poems and stories that made him one of the most famous and outstanding figures in American literary history.
