Hill's on the Green: Hill's was a substantial farmhouse. The farmyard and outbuildings were at the back of the house and to the right. The haggard was in the field to the left. To the right of the house and outbuildings a tennis court had been constructed on land purchased from the Hill family, for the use of the professional elements in the town. At this time the tennis court was in a state of some decay. We had some land behind the haggard on which we kept a goat, Gertie, who barked saplings and ate clothes off the washing line; as well as some hens and bantams, guinea fowl and a ferocious Rhode Island Red cock called Peter. My mother is in the top left-hand window in this photo. |
