Temples in Beijing

There are more standing temples to be found in Beijing than anywhere else in China.
The oldest temple in Beijing, the Tanzhe Temple, was built during the Jin Dynasty (256-420). During the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties, there were more than 1,000 such religious structures in the city, including Buddhist and Taoist temples and Islamic mosques. These temples present a felicitous blending of architecture, sculpture, stone inscription, painting and other art forms. But there is more to the temples than their physical beauty. Tourists are also attracted by their captivating surrounding scenery, various traditional temple fairs and religious festivals passed down through the generations.
