"Fiery Tale". Oil and Canvas. 60 x 50 cm

It so happened that Pricess Diana had been my nympholepsy, I was obsessed with her. Frequently her problems were similar to mine, exactly, the same life situations, or turnarounds of fate.
I saw Princess Diana in Russia in 1995, when she visited Moscow and a childrens hospital where my little daughter was with a leg injury. I watched her and I thought that she must have at the time experience the same tortures, when she was waiting for the outcome of Williams operation after his injury. I could understand her feelings, like everyone could I suppose. Everyone could understand, except her husband. I was reading a book by James Hewitt "Princess in love" when I had some problems with my husband. Involuntarily I fit the situation on me. So, altogether, this train of events has stayed in the back of my mind very deep, for ever. Any information about Lady Diana was very interesting to me. And I painted Lady Diana over and over, and eventually constituted a whole collection of paintings on Lady Dianas theme. There are 7 paintings in it. I want to explain some of them. |

The purple colour of a velvet drape constantly reminds of the royal power and the blood. The red couler is the colour of violence, colour of disrupt and edited life. Napoleon deemed it English colour. Pearl is a well-known symbol of the angels tears. As "The Times" wrote about my first painting entitled "Life and Death", there are "the agents of the State spying on a radiant, bejewelled Diana ,and a tangled branch to represent the tentacles of the State" in it. A severed hand is a symbol of sacrifice and victim. Lifes wheel is near it.
"Three Colours of Time". There are three Dianas in it. When she came into the Royal Family she thought she had been prepared for everything and had the knowledge of whats coming ahead. The fairy tale of Cinderella has come to an end. Princess Diana created a different end of the old story. Her whole life has changed, turned, upside down. The beautiful palace has turned into an ice-house, desperate love - into desperate jealousy, understanding and confidence transmuted into morbid and doubtful exercise in self-control. A extinguished candle, a dandelion, faded leaves are recognized symbols of hopes gone. |

"Pardon for Sin" is the most mystique painting. Dodis head is presented as the iconographic St Johns the Baptist head. Two Christs arise in the modern world. They debate the life with Biblical duality. One of them speaks about sin. The second replies: "He that is without sin among you, let him cast the first stone." Diana holds a stone in her hand. And I think there is nobody in the world who will cast this stone.
A wing, like a symbol of flight, has another sense here. Maat, the Queen of justice in the ancient Egypt exempted the dead from a charge if his heart was light as a feather. "Two outlooks". There are two camps in this picture. Books emblematize ancient traditions and strict rules. The Kings of England have many traditions good and diverse. They marry a virgin. The Princes of Wales, generally, have a mistress and, generally, they take her, from one and the same family. Traditionally, the Kings of England have been "Defenders of the Faith" since Henry the Eights days. The same Henry the Eight, as you might remember, preferred to kill his wives. According to a famous theory of the English historian Margaret Marrey the Kings of England used to make human sacrifices for the love of their own welfare, when the age of members of the Royal Family was aliquot seven (35, 49, 70 for example). Are these traditions still alive? You shall judge for yourself. |

People and their deeds are difference things. A man with a scalpel is not necessarily surgeon. But who was born to be a king is sure a king, even though he likes to catch a fly as Domician in the ancient Rome, or unfortunately does paintings and produces an apple cider. This is why kings may not have a private life. Their privacy is already a profession, personal appearance is qualification, the vacant hours are work, a sex is a public domain. They are lucked out.
Princess Diana is alone in this picture, as she was alone in the Royal Family. Her part includes a bunch of grapes and wine as a symbol of vital fire and spiritual energy. Archangel Gabriel gave a bunch of grapes to Adam and Eva. The grapes are a symbol of the angels compassion. The compassion is Dianas symbol. For both, her critics and her admires, Princess Diana was a kind of rebel. Compassion is always revolutionary. Pomegranate reminds of spilled blood. "Death". Defenceless and naked, Diana cannot protect herself anymore. But now she has placid skies and deep in peace spirit. "Future", "Conspiracy". I analyse the last train of events in these paintings. |

Princess Diana has found her role. The unique role. She has created a model of a future monarchy, the monarchy of XXI century,a bright, young, active contemporary monarchy, that make people feel important, supporte them, gave them light in the dark tunnels. She has fulfiled a project of a responsive, mobile, open monarchy, lived in reality. She demonstrated a monarchy that has more close contacts with people, a deeper understanding of peoples emotions, peoples insecurity, peoples distress, and peoples hopes and dreams.
The Windsor Royal Family have declined Lady Dianas example. It was a struggle of two political programmes of the monarchy development. And Monarchy needs to adapt and to change in order to survive. "Ill flight to the end",- she said. My paintings only illustrate the words of Princess Diana. It was a prophecy for her. A prophecy that has come true. Diana was very active lately. She had become free and economically independent, went her own way. Prince Charles and Princess Diana were rivals in the political life, because every time, when you read about Diana, you cant help thinking : and what about Charles? What is he doing? |

The Balance is not merely a symbol of justice in my last painting. Bran the Blessed, the ruler of Britain in the Celtic mythology had a magic reanimation boiler. The severed and reanimated head of Bran the Blessed head was brought into London and turned to enemy for defence. Two magic boilers are under the tongue in my painting entitled "Conspiracy". Will the boilers animate the crown of England and Diana, who is a symbol of the crown and Great Britain? What will become with the crown without Princess Diana?
Warriors resuscitated in magic boiler have become dumb. So the alive must speak. Much time has gone by since the day of Princess Diana and Dodi Al Fayed death, but the circumstances of the accident have not yet become clearer. What did really happen on that fatal evening ? Reading the interview with the Princess of Wales in the afterlight I involuntarily accented the attention on some lines. "I was a problem, I was a liability..." "I was almost embarrassment..." "I was a fullstop ,"- she did iterate throughout the interview. "They see me as a threat of some kind ... Because I do things differently , because I dont go by a rule book, because I lead from the heart,"- she explained. "Every strong woman in history has had to walk down a similar path. Its the strength |

that causes the confusion and the fear. Why is she strong? Where does she get it from? Where is she taking it? Where is she going to use it?",- thus Princess Diana characterized her relation with Royal Family. "Ill fight to the end...".
As a historian I know that fortuity as an august accident has never happened fortuitously . Obviously, it was not an accident. There was a conspiracy. Princess Diana indicated who must take full responsibility. "The enemy was my husbands department... My husbands side were very busy stopping me",- she said. They couldnt understand and accept Lady Diana. Windsor and Princess Di were on different sides of the trenches. They had different concepts of Good and Evil ,incompatible ideas about social activity, exact antipodes of opinion for the family life. It was a situation that generated and concentrated hate and antagonism. The scene was set for the Tragedy. "Theres no better way to dismantle a personality than to isolate it",-said Princess Diana in her time. There is no better way to dismantle a personality than to dismantle it - we can say so now. Disentanglement and disclosure of baffling crimes were always a visiting card of an Englishman. I remember, when I was a little girl one of my classmates wrote a latter to Sharlok Holms, to Bekker street, London, and asked him to find his lost dog. |

The history teaches us that investigation of a political crime depends on the powers interest. I think this crime will never be out. But I do hope my paintings will keep people thinking about this problem. My witnesses are Dianas life, her words, her deeds, her history. Death is like the sun: it is impossible to view it fixedly.
I belong to another nation and social level. I have different mentality. Despite the fact that I am an artist and a historian, it was very difficult to imaging Dianas life. Possibly, I dont understand her dreams, her hopes and the life exactly. Leonardo da Vinci compared investigation with art in his day. In my case this is quite vice versa. Are my conclusions and arguments correct? You are to judge. Margarita Makarova. |
