Pattaya-International Beach Resort. It was the end of April 1959. Really hot with most sensible people lounging in the shade. But a group of American servicemen on R&R (rest and recreation) were having the time of their lives sunning, swimming, and generally enjoying the good life on a 3-km curving beach called Pattaya. They started something, and for almost 40 years Pattaya has played host to the world's tourists seeking R&R on its wonderful beach. The ramshackle thatched cottages and beer bar shacks have evolved into four and five-star resorts, nightclubs and beer bar buildings. For a while Pattaya became somewhat naughty, legacy of the GI days, with a vibrant nightlife and night girls. But times continue to change, and today's tourist demands a lot more than just sitting on the beach and touring the nightspots in South Pattaya. LARN ISLAND 7.5 kms by boat from Pattaya, the islands has a beautiful sandy beach, Laem Than, with a variety of good quality accommodation and restaurants. An ideal bases for scuba diving, as well as such water sports as scooters, skiing, sailing in catamarans and dinghies, windsurfing and para-gliding. Nearby are a few smaller islands exploration trips for up to 80 passengers, or a simple ferry service to Larn Island. THAILAND IN MINIATURE A chance to see miniature replicas of Thailand's best know tourists attractions, from the Emerald Buddha Temple and the Stone Castle at Pimai, as well as world famous landmark such as the Leaning Tower of Pisa, Italy, and London's Tower Bridge. Open from 7.00 am to 10.00 pm. Admission is 200 Baht. Pattaya Elephant Camp Located nearby Siam Country Club, the Camp puts on daily elephant performances, beginning at 2.30 pm. Admission is 250 baht.
BOTTLE MUSEUM Peter Bay de Ley, a Dutchman, has created a fascinating museum, featuring amazing displays he has constructed inside his bottles. They include a vast array of ships, as well as Thai cultural and architectural designs. Open from 10.00 am to 10 pm Admission is 100 baht ( 50 baht for children) Tel (038) 422957 PATTAYA SPEEDWAY A mini race trace for go karts, located on Thep Prasit Road, which connects Pattaya, Jomthein and Sukhumvit Road. Open for professional and amateur races who crave excitement. RIPLEY'S BELIEVE IT OR NOT MUSEUM Next to the Royal Garden Resort on the Beach Road, the museum houses curious displays from all over the world.
