The Unicorn
BBS came into existence in early 90's to fill
the local Saskatoon niche of
BBS's which was dominated by Maximus
and Renegade
Software packages. Originally
setup on an Amiga 2000, with 2 floppys. Next came a short lived Vbbs
, and Maximus
setups on the new PC. Lastly the Illusion clone Obv/2.35r²
in a Dos shell from Win95.
Also, with memorable mention , Front Doors , Squish and Gecho , Directory
Freedom,
Shez , US Robitics
modems played a large part in handling the new incoming/outgoing
data the BBS created. As rumours would have it Shiven Bastard
and Lord Tracer are
working on a 32 bit TelNet capable up-grade. But, don't hold your breath
now because
these guys are next to impossible to get a hold of for they are
of the elitists choice few
blood line . A much Honorable mention must go out to an original Unicorn

at Devry Institute .__
An issue continuously surfaced...(as I saw
it).........It did not exist in the eyes of the users
but in pocket of this Sysop . To justify and rationalize the costs of hardware
, phone line
rentals , Internet files retrieval times, etc. A 2$/mnth or 20$/lifetime
donation was asked
of the users . You could still be any age, gender, colour...en still get
on for 39m a day for
free, even if ya didn't agree to those terms. To play the latest registered
online games like
LORD
, Usurper
, Falcons
Eye/Honor or join into message area topical
discussions from
imported retreived Message_Net_Works, like, PrivNet, InfiNet, LoonNet,
SwingsNet etc.
Downloads were restricted to mostly member files , but back-up drivers
could be gotten
if you knew how to plead . Still we had a declining 280+ Unicorn's
BBS members list on
an antiquated eL¡T¡St
software package . Leaving, the Sysops whom payed da bills `round
the ole dragoons cave in a dither. So duh...The Unicorn's
.pif call has ceased to exist upon
the Babylon 5 desktop theme, that fateful midnight Jan 31/98 maintenance
ride, HER last.
<sigh>
a sincere , Thanx fer Comin' bye ¡

Oblivion/2 Bulletin Board System v2.40 Info [May 30, 1998]
After almost three years since the last full release (v2.30), Oblivion/2 will be in beta stages again in the next few months. In agreement with Oblivion/2's original developer, Eric Edward Katz, Murray Stokely has passed down to Paul Cox, the development of Oblivion/2. The new World Headquarters is Transcentral Enterprises at +1-405-624-5786 (1:19/24@FidoNet, 111:6405/0@Sysop's TechNet), and the address of the Oblivion/2 home page is http://oblivionbbs.home.ml.org/.
The current Oblivion/2 team consists of Paul Cox (programming, support, beta coordination, etc.) and Vincent Danen (documentation). All of the old beta sites are no longer beta sites for a variety of reasons, one being most of them have fallen out of touch with the software since the last release, and another being that a lot of them have gone down. The only beta site that is still a beta site is Alderaan run by Mike Melli. They are currently taking applications for beta sites, with preference to those that were former beta sites. The Beta Team Application is now available.
The biggest immediate change is that Oblivion/2 is now freeware. v2.40 and above will no longer contain the serial number check, and the Oblivion/2 Serial Number Generator is available for the current release. It will generate the serial number to put in your configuration to register your copy of Oblivion/2.
Another big change concerns support. With Dark Side of the Moon going down and taking the Oblivion/2 Support Network with it, some decisions had to be made. Rather than resurrect OSNet, the Sysop's TechNet will become the "home network" of Oblivion/2. In doing this, not only can the Oblivion/2 Sysop get support for Oblivion/2, but also any other aspect of BBSing if they so desire. The STN.BBS.SOFT echo will be the official support echo, unless demand justifies an STN.OBLIVION2 echo in the future. All Oblivion/2 public releases will be hatched through the STN File Distribution Network, which is also gated into the FidoNet Filebone. For information on the Sysop's TechNet, visit http://stnnet.ml.org/, or contact Vincent at [email protected] or via netmail at 1:17/667@FidoNet or 111:111/0@Sysop's TechNet.
He is pleased to announce a new direction for Oblivion/2. They will be attempting to meet the best standards available, and initially these will consist of implementing JAM and Squish message base support, and Version7 nodelist support for netmail. With the use of JAM and Squish bases, there will no longer be a need for a "middle" mail tosser. Your mail tosser (be it FastEcho, GEcho, Squish, etc.) will be able to directly read and write from the message bases, making mail processing extremely more efficient, faster, and powerful. Not only will they be faster, they will also take up less disk space than the current proprietary message system.
Other features planned for v2.40 (by no means set in stone) are: Fixing all existing bugs, year 2000 compatibility, real name support, better netmail support, and better multinode support, as well as various other things. Things that will be coming in the future include a strong scripting language, multiple language support, increasing Oblivion/2's already strong configurability and security, and porting the software to OS/2. Another feature that we would like to look at in the future is direct Internet support.
The v2.40 release will also include a major enhancement to the documentation. Vincent has worked incredibly hard in virtually rewriting the documentation and producing a very complete 500k+ documentation file. A lot of features were left out of the v2.30 docs, and nearly every aspect of the BBS is now covered in detail. "HOWTO" guides for complex topics such as multinode, running under OS/2 or Windows will also be included. If anyone feels there is something that should be added, contact Vincent with the details.
Many
thanks to the Sysops who stuck with Oblivion/2 through its darkest hours...
we hope to reward you with an excellent product that is well worth the
wait.
