A Mother's Heart

What is it in a Mother's heart,
That makes her give so much,
To those who from the very start,
Command her every touch?

She gives her eyes that we may see,
Through mending night on night,
She gives her youth that we may be,
Content and free from fright.

She gives her hands that we may feel,
Through scrubbing endless years,
When we admit pain, she will kneel,
And beg to share our tears.

Forgiveness comes with no request,
She gives it every day,
She gives her future hours of rest,
That our minds will be gay.

What is it in a Mother's heart?
I cannot even guess!
But she does much more than her part,
To bring us happiness.

A life of toil she will endure,
To see a happy smile,
Which somehow makes her very sure,
Her work has been worth while.
