I Remember |
I remember: The lawn as a blanket of green, Covered by those who listened with lips sealed, To one who felt grand as a queen, While I told of a place named Flanders Field. I remember: A woman with dark brownish hair, Who smiled as she taught our lessons each day, When I needed help, she was there, With a tender word to show me the way. I remember: The water which just seemed to wait, With a welcome coolness from the hot sun, And it shouted I have a date, With you girls as soon as dinner is done. I remember: The school-house with quiet respect, For in this building I learned many things, But that my mind seems to neglect, As I rush through the past and my heart sings. I remember: The basement for it was my pride, With the basket-ball, I aimed for the moon, There is the stage along one side, Where I raised my voice in a happy tune. I remember: The wise woman who once a week, On Sunday Morning would lead us in prayer, And strength came where I had been weak, As the music of a hymn filled the air. I remember: Near the greenhouse there is a space, With a name gayly painted on a sign, To show a girl still works the place, Where flowers grew neath a name that was mine. I remember: The day I dressed in a white gown, To stand with my friends in the candle-light, And watch two hands swing up and down, As our voices told of the Holy Night. Yes, I remember: All of this with a secret smile, Because a very lucky girl was I, For I laughed and played all the while, And I was happy in those days gone by. |
