Prayer Of A Lifetime

When I was a little girl Id watch for the first star at night,
And as it flickered way up high in the sky, Id wish with all my might,
Then the time would come to go to sleep and as Id kneel to pray,
Id ask the lord in my timid voice, if I could be like you someday.

For you could smile and make me feel the whole wide world was mine,
Your laughter echoed in my heart with the thrill that life was good and fine,
Your eyes shone more than the stars as you bent to give me a kiss,
And I asked the lord as your lips touched my face, Please let me be like this.

You chose your words so carefully and I understood each one,
As youd answer all my questions in the evening, when your work was done,
You helped solve my problems, for you taught me to be fair and true,
And as your tender voice filled my thoughts Id dream that I was just like you.

My respect for you is so great it never ceases to grow,
And now that Im a married woman, these things I want you to know,
I still pray as we stand together and our hands reach to touch,
Please let me be like my mother, so my daughter will love me as much.
