The Lesson I Learned

The sun shined brightly from high above on that day so long ago.
In the fields, big green beans stood waiting, row on row.
They waited for someone to pick them, thus lighten their heavy load,
As a group of workers came down the dusty road.

The group of workers seemed rather young, but were a healthy sight,
Thought the boss as he said: These kids will be just right!
So he grinned and put them to work then stood watching the busy bunch,
As they picked so fast, that soon it was time for lunch.

After we ate, some of the boys caught one of the girls by surprise.
They held her neath the Faucet till tears filled her eyes.
She screamed and kicked and made a fuss, but the boys just shouted with glee!
When they grew tired, I knew.. their next victim was me.

I made up my mind, as the boys came near, to take it with a smile.
The water hurt my face, but I laughed all the while.
The boys told me I was a good sport, And theyve mentioned through the years
. I learned that day, how a smile helps hold back the tears!
