1789--The French Revolution. Storming of the Bastille. Lafayette commands National Guard. Declaration of the Rights of Man. French royalists begin to emigrate. Nationalization of church property. Austrian Netherlands declares independence as Belgium.

1790--Louis XVI accepts constitution. Austrians suppress Belgians.

1791--Louis XVI tries to leave France; captured. French National Assembly dissolves.

1792--Girondists form ministry; revolutionary Commune established. Legislative Assembly suspended; the royal family imprisoned. French Republic proclaimed Sept. 22. Revolutionary calendar comes into force. Jacobins under Danton seize power. Trial of Louis XVI. First guillotine in Paris.

1793--Louis XVI executed. Danton heads Committee of Public Safety. Reign of Terror begins. Marat murdered.Robespierre and St. Just join Danton. Roman Catholicism banned. 1802--Napoleon becomes Presidentof Italian Republic, creates Order of the Legion of Honor, First Consul for life.Peace of Amiens between Britain & France.

1803--Swiss cantons regain independence. Louisiana Purchase in USA. Renewal of war between France & Britain.French complete occupation of Hanover.

1804--Plot against Napoleon. Crowned as Emperor.

1805--Britain, Russia, Austria unite against France. Napoleon crowned King of Italy. French victory at Austerlitz. Peace  of Pressburg, Austria & France. Establishment of modern Egypt.

1806--Joseph Bonaparte named King of Naples. Louis Bonaparte named King of Holland. Britain blockades French coast. Prussia declares war on France. Napoleon enters Berlin. Closes Continental ports against Britain. French army enters Warsaw.

1810--Napoleon’s zenith. Marries Archduchess Marie Louise of Austria. Annexes Holland, Prussian cities.

1811--Napoleon annexes Oldenburg. Austria bankrupt. George III of England insane; Prince Regent takes over.

1812--Disasterous Russian campaign. Napoleon loses all but 20,000 out of 550,000 men. Failed conspiracy of General Malet; executed.

1813--Prussia, Russia,, Austria all rise against Napoleon. Defeat at Leipzig. Expelled from Holland; return of William of Orange. Wellington invades France.

1814--Allies defeat French and enter Paris, March 30. Napoleon abdicates; banished to Elba April 11. Louis XVIII returns to throne.
