At 27 years of age, Darun is the youngest shogun of the Pars Royal Army, with 10 000 horsemen under his command. In Pars, he was known as the 'Warrior among warriors', and in Shindra, his unparralleled valour as a military man brought upon him the nickname of 'The Shogun as fierce as a tiger'.

On the eve of the battle of Atorobatene, he quarrelled with the other generals on the strategy to be implemented on the battlefield, and incurred the displeasure of King Andragoras. He lost his command, but because of his Uncle Bafreez's help, he got new duties, as guadian of the young Prince Arslan.

At first he hated this new responsibility that forved him to lose his rank and his men, but he gradually discovered that this duty which he had once found irksome was the most important thing in his life.
