King of Shindra, Karikara the second has two sons, Gadevy and Rajendra, both Shindran Princes. Gadevy is the eldest by one month, and also the one born to the King's legitimate wife. Rajendra, on the other hand, is the youngest, and the illegimate son of the King and a chambermaid, but has been recognized by Karikara as his.

In Shindra, it is the current King's duty to choose his successor before his death, and Karikara is very troubled by the choice he has to make. Not only are his two sons fighting with each other to gain the throne by force, and pushed the country into an all-out civil war, but none of them seems content to wait for him to make his choice, nor did any of them come to see him in his sickness. For the King has been sick for a long time, waiting in his sickbed for one of his sons to prove himself worthy of being his successor, the next King of Shindra. His only link to the outside world is the Shindran High Priest who faithfully chronicles the ongoing war to the sick man.

Shortly before his death, unable to make a choice, he decided to leave it to a 'duel before the Gods'. In this desperate measure, the idea that the degree of Royal blood is dependant of the firsthand show of strength and swordsmanship of the two brothers and that whomever would survive would inherit the throne appaled him but was the only option he could see.

Karikara died close to the end of OVA2, stopping the war between Gadevy and Rajendra, in which the latter had dragged his Pars ally, Prince Arslan.
